South Dakota Welcomes YouDid you know that South Dakota was the home of 'Sue' the Tyrannosaurus Rex that was unearthed in the Badlands? South Dakota is the ancestral home of the Sioux and these Native Americans followed the buffalo herds across the state in order to survive. It was at Wounded Knee that an entire group of Sioux were massacred and visitors can visit the site to see the naturally preserve area this proud tribe of Native Americans called home. The Sioux nation is still a big part of the state's population and visitors to South Dakota can enjoy their very prevalent influence.
South Dakota was also the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the young woman who wrote the 'Little House on the Prairie' series that was turned into a television show. The city of Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok was killed after a poker game and now the location of another television show, is also in South Dakota. And, of course, there is Mount Rushmore than immortalizes four of America's presidents.
One of the most beautiful locations in South Dakota is the Black Hills. They are part of western South Dakota and they are filled with monuments and parks amidst its towering peaks and forests. It is a great place for fishing, hiking, biking, camping, and rock climbing. The land supposedly belongs today to the Lakota Sioux who still live there although this is a topic that is contested by the government still. No matter who it belongs to, the Black Hills is considered scared to the tribe and once you experience the beauty of the area, you will surely understand why.
