San Diego is a beautiful city and it was named after Saint Didacus. It is the second largest city in California and it affords you one of the greatest views of the Pacific Ocean. The area that we know as San Diego today was once inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians and the Portuguese explorer Cabrillo was the first European to visit the area. In 1542 he claimed San Diego Bay for the Spanish Empire and when Vizcaino visited the area in 1602, he named the Mission Bay and Point Loma area of today San Diego.
The Presidio was established in 1769 overlooking the old town area and the Mission San Diego de Alcala was established. The active mission was closed in the 1830s but the church attached to it is still standing and is listed as National Historic Landmark. San Diego was the center of the 1848 gold rush and was incorporated as a city in 1850. In 1907 a naval presence was established in San Diego with the Navy Coaling Station which helped the city grow and two worlds fairs were held there. Many of the Spanish-Baroque styled buildings found in Balboa Park were built for the fairs and they were only supposed to be temporary structures. They have been restored and are now historic landmarks in the town.
After World War II the local military and aerospace industry that helped support San Diego suffered cutbacks, leaving the city officials to find a way to bring the city back to life. Biotechnology has found a home in San Diego today and the telecommunications company Qualcomm calls the city home.
