The last state to enter the United States was Hawaii and this state is made up of multiple islands in the Pacific Ocean. The last of Kamehamehas descendants reigned the islands until 1872 and they were followed by another strong Hawaiian family of rulers, the last of which was Queen Liliuokalani. By 1900 the Hawaiian Islands and been made a territory of the United States to be followed by statehood in 1959. The beaches of Maui where used to train marines during World War II and the island was the base of over 100,000 soldiers during this time.
