Maui has been named the best destination by travel magazines on a regular basis and the islands offer you a relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In 1790 the island was invaded by King Kamehameha I although it would be a few years before he would finally take the island. Lahaina on Maui became his capital. By 1823 missionaries from New England came to the island and settled in the capital. They banned the dancing of the hula and forced the natives of the island to dress in modern clothing, changing the culture drastically. It is interesting to note that even as the missionaries attempted to change the Hawaiian culture, they also helped preserve it.

The island of Maui was also a major center of whaling activity and at one point in time over 400 ships had visited the island. The last of Kamehamehas descendants reigned the islands until 1872 and they were followed by another strong Hawaiian family of rulers, the last of which was Queen Liliuokalani. By 1900 the Hawaiian Islands and been made a territory of the United States to be followed by statehood in 1959. The beaches of Maui where used to train marines during World War II and the island was the base of over 100,000 soldiers during this time.
